Ibadan Hospital ‘Detains’ Mother, Baby Over Unpaid N300,000 Delivery Bill

The management of a hospital has “detained” Mrs. Adenike Samuel, 35, and her infant because they have not paid the N300,000 delivery fee.

Due to her inability to pay the hospital bill, the woman gave delivery on Easter eve and was unable to return home.

Despite being released on April 1, the woman and infant were detained at Montana Medical Centre, which is situated in the Oyo State capital’s difficult area. This was due to the mother’s inability to pay for the hospital where she gave birth.

At an encounter with the media on Tuesday, the mother—an Ibadan local who resides at Baba Agba, Wire & Cable, Apata in Ibadan—confirmed her story.

She said that even though she and her child had been released from the hospital on April 1, they were not permitted to return home because they were unable to pay the remaining balance.

She said that while her husband could only afford to pay N100,000 of the N400,000 medical bill, there was still a balance of N300,000 due.

Samuel said that the reason the cost was so exorbitant was because she had a Caesarean section to deliver the baby.

Because I had a Caesarean section (CS), the cost equated to that.

“My profession is tailoring. Mrs. Samuel stated, “I had two children before this pregnancy, but I didn’t know I was pregnant until the scan revealed that I was carrying a baby.

She begged Governor Seyi Makinde, organizations, and people to help her pay the fee so that she could return home with the kid.

I’m appealing to Nigerians and organizations, in particular the governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, to rescue me and provide financial assistance. The distressed woman said, “I want to go home and take care of my kids.”

Samuel continued, saying she was moved every time she saw subsequent people leave the hospital where they were being detained due to inability to pay.

The spouse, Mr. Happiness Samuel, a “Okada” rider from Cross River State, stated that because of the nation’s economic difficulties, it would be very challenging for him to raise the remaining sum.
