These are the 10 lawsuits, settlements, and legal events that Becker’s has covered since January 17; they range from an Illinois system resolving antitrust claims to a court reducing the damages in the civil action against Johns Hopkins All Children that became well-known due to a documentary:    

  1. In a whistleblower lawsuit, the United States and the state of Washington accused MultiCare Health, located in Tacoma, Washington, of deceitfully charging federal healthcare programs for spine procedures done by physician Jason Dreyer, DO, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane between 2019 and 2021.
  2. A civil action has been filed against a California doctor and Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach by 73 former patients who claim they were molested sexually.
  3. In order to address claims that two radiology clinics fraudulently billed federal healthcare programs for pictures used in image-guided radiation therapy treatments, New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital agreed to pay $801,000.
  4. Centra Health, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, sued its own oncology provider group for more than $7 million.
  5. A former head emergency department nurse at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, filed a whistleblower complaint alleging that the hospital fired him for persistently bringing up safety problems at work.
  6. A class-action complaint from families accusing Seattle Children’s Hospital of allowing mold to grow on its property sickened fourteen children and claimed the lives of seven others. The trial has begun.
  7. A former worker filed Pittsburgh-based UPMC, claiming that the medical institution engages in anticompetitive behavior that endangers competent nursing personnel.
  8. Endeavor Health, originally known as NorthShore-Edward-Elmhurst Health, is situated in Evanston, Illinois. It settled antitrust claims brought up following NorthShore’s 2000 acquisition of Highland Park (Ill.) Hospital by agreeing to pay a $55 million all-cash settlement.
  9. Timothy Hardy, MD, a gynecologist, is suing Chesapeake (Va.) Regional Medical Center, claiming that his hospital privileges were withdrawn due to his accusations that the facility prioritized “economics” over patient care.
  10. The St. Petersburg, Florida-based Johns Hopkins All Children’s litigation lawsuit, which gained national attention due to a Netflix documentary, saw the judge reduce the hospital’s required damages by $47.5 million.
