Coronavirus (COVID-19) Vaccine CPT Codes for Billing announced by AMA

The AMA (American Medical Association) has recently released information regarding the new CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology) for Coronavirus Vaccine, covering the administration cost of upcoming COVID-19 vaccines. As per the latest press release issued by AMA, the new CPT codes for Coronavirus approved for the experimental vaccine. We know that the new coronavirus vaccine is being developed by Pfizer Corporation, working jointly with German BioNTech, and US biotech Moderna Therapeutic Inc. In clinical trials, the new coronavirus vaccine successfully prevents the disease and reduces the infection risk by 95%, so we can expect that the coronavirus vaccine will be available very soon in the market in December or January or as soon as FDA grants approval.

The novel coronavirus emerged as an epidemic and spread across the globe, which caused seriousness in the US healthcare system, and put pressure on the FDA to approve available vaccines for Covid-19 to protect the lives. The FDA is working to regulate the new vaccine and ensure that the new covid-19 vaccine should be safe & effective in controlling the infection rate. Also, the Coronavirus vaccine should protect the potential risk and side effects to administer.

The AMA tends to introduce more vaccine CPT codes for covid-19 as more vaccine manufacturers are approaching to FDA to review and approve their vaccine products. According to the AMA, the new vaccine-specific CPT codes can only effect once the FDA grants clearance to vaccine products.

On November 10th, 2020, the AMA CPT editorial panel confirmed the addition of two new specific CPT codes for each of two coronavirus vaccines (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) as well as approved CPT codes to cover the cost for immunization and administration for new vaccines. The American Medical Association (AMA) added the new Coronavirus vaccine codes and administration in the (CPT code sets) Current Procedural Terminology.
