The clinical division of Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan Health, located in Ann Arbor, employs about 2,300 healthcare workers who have joined the Service Employees International Union Healthcare Michigan.
Following a card check on March 18, the workers received union certification from SEIU Healthcare Michigan, according to an announcement made by the union on March 26.
There are several ways to create a union, according to the National Labor Relations Board. On its website, the labor board states that if at least thirty percent of employees sign a petition or card expressing their support for unionization, the NLRB will hold an election. After that, employees would vote on whether to form a union. Employers may also choose to voluntarily recognize a union by using additional documentation or signed union authorization cards as proof.
Patient care technicians, phlebotomists and phlebotomist specialists, unit clerks, unit hosts, patient service assistants, patient services intermediate, patient services associates, and patient services senior are among the new union members at University of Michigan Health, as per a union press release.
According to the union, they will join 283 certified respiratory therapists and technicians at Michigan Medicine who already joined SEIU Healthcare Michigan in July of last year.
Willie Griggs, a five-year employee of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, stated in the press release that
"as patient service associates, we play a vital part in our patients' recovery." "We see to it that patients' initial experiences with the University of Michigan health system are favorable. Growing up in an union family in the auto industry, I witnessed firsthand the advantages and protections that membership offered. We at the University of Michigan have a voice in the workplace through the union, which allows us to voice our concerns."
Michigan Medicine’s spokesman said to Becker’s, “I don’t have anything to add at this time.”
Around 2,000 more Michigan Medicine employees, including call center agents, administrative assistants, associates, seniors, and specialists, financial counselors, medical billing staff, and other members of the patient service job family, are still being sought after by SEIU Healthcare Michigan, according to the union.
